Making a Handmade Accordion Photography Book with Emily Sheffer
Wednesdays from 6:00-9:00 pm ET on Zoom
January 7, 14, 21 & 28, 2026
Fee: $400
WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
In this four-week course, students will learn how to shape a photographic series into a handmade accordion book; a versatile, sculptural form that unfolds and expands. Through sequencing, book design, and simple binding techniques, this workshop offers an introduction to making an artist’s book from start to finish.
Each week will build upon the last as we work through concept and technique. We’ll begin by exploring examples of accordion books and discussing how this form can shape narrative. Students will learn strategies for editing and sequencing photographs, planning page layouts, and choosing papers and materials. Step-by-step demonstrations will guide students through printing, folding, and constructing their books by hand.
By the end of the course, students will have created a finished accordion book featuring their own photographs, along with the skills to continue exploring handmade bookmaking as part of their creative practice.
This course is ideal for: photographers, artists, and anyone interested in the book as a medium for visual storytelling. No prior bookbinding experience is required.
